A dedicated teacher who has been working for 23 years was interested in fashion merchandising before she started her teaching career. Ms. Clarizio worked for Liz Claiborne and hated it. “I didn’t enjoy working at Liz Claiborne because my boss, Liz Claiborne’s husband, was very demanding and yelled a lot...” Clarizio described it as “a stressful environment.” After working for Claiborne she made the decision to get her degree in English at William Paterson. “I did student teaching to see if I liked it and I loved it,” Clarizio says.
Clarizio is in her 23rd year of teaching. She started in 1998 teaching sixth graders in the school she herself went to. The school's name is Cedar Grove; she taught there for five years. In 2005 she interviewed at Jefferson Township High School, however, they could only hire her for the middle school then eventually move her to the high school which happened five years ago in 2016.
Teaching for 23 years, there is definitely some advice to give, “Maintain a respectful relationship with a student. They don’t learn from a teacher they don’t like,” Clarizio says. When it comes to the students, they can be her biggest challenge and also what she likes best about the job. She describes it as “a lifelong friendship.” In the classroom, “I have to find a balance, making sure the work gets done” Clarizio says.
Clarizio, as mentioned, has worked with both middle school and high school, “I definitely prefer high school. I enjoy the maturity of the students and the content of the curriculum,” Clarizio says. Clarizio has created many special bonds with her students. As a teacher she wants to engage her students and make it fun for them to learn. “I always try to picture myself in the seat of the student,” Clarizio says. The school setting can definitely be a stresser for many students, it can be overwhelming. However, with teachers like Ms. Clarizio, students enjoy going to school and are ready to learn. Ms. Clarizio is a very experienced teacher who is always there for her students, she maintains respectful relationships so she can help them as a teacher and also as a friend without crossing any boundaries.
